Polkadot uses a nominated proof-of-stake system. Token holders called nominators back trustworthy validators with their DOT, and in return share in staking rewards. You do not have to run a validator yourself; you simply select which validators (or a nomination pool) to support. The authoritative documentation is the Polkadot Wiki at wiki.polkadot.com, and the network’s main site is now polkadot.com after a rebrand from polkadot.network.

There are two common paths. Nomination pools let you stake with as little as 1 DOT by pooling with others, which makes staking accessible to smaller holders. Direct nomination gives you more control over which validators you back but generally requires a larger balance to be actively earning. Both are handled through the official, non-custodial Polkadot Staking Dashboard, which offers a simple mode for newcomers and an advanced mode for experienced stakers.

Rewards are variable and depend on the validators you choose, their commission, and the total amount of DOT staked across the network. Crucially, Polkadot has slashing: if a validator you nominate commits a serious fault, a portion of the stake backing it, including yours, can be slashed. This makes validator selection a real responsibility, and it is why spreading nominations across reputable validators is common advice. Staked DOT is also subject to an unbonding period, so you cannot move it instantly.

Before staking, read the wiki’s staking pages, use only the official dashboard reached from polkadot.com or the wiki, and pick validators with strong uptime and fair commission. Because the brand recently changed domains, be extra careful about imitation sites that exploit the transition. Legitimate staking never asks for your recovery phrase.

How to participate — via official sources only

  1. Read the official staking guide on the Polkadot Wiki at wiki.polkadot.com/learn/learn-staking.
  2. Choose your route: a nomination pool (from ~1 DOT) for simplicity, or direct nomination for more control.
  3. Use the official Polkadot Staking Dashboard linked from polkadot.com and the wiki.
  4. Select validators or a pool with a solid track record and reasonable commission to reduce slashing exposure.
  5. Remember staked DOT must be unbonded and wait out the cooldown before it becomes transferable again.
Watch out:
  • The Polkadot brand moved to polkadot.com and wiki.polkadot.com; verify you are on those official domains, not look-alikes.
  • No official Polkadot staking flow needs your seed phrase typed into a web form.
