What is Airdrop?

A distribution of free crypto tokens to many wallet addresses at once, often to reward early users or promote a new project.

An airdrop is when a project sends tokens directly to wallets, usually for free, to bootstrap a community or reward people who used the product early. You typically become eligible by doing normal on-chain activity before a cut-off, then claiming later during a set period.

Airdrops matter for rewards hunters because a genuine one can be worth real money for actions you were already doing. But they are also a favourite disguise for scams. A legitimate airdrop never asks for your seed phrase, never asks you to “pay to unlock” tokens, and never requires you to connect to a random site that requests a broad token approval.

For example, a Layer 2 network might snapshot everyone who bridged funds and made a few transactions, then let those users claim a governance token weeks later on the official site. The safety note is simple: only claim from a URL you have independently verified, watch for a look-alike domain, and treat any unexpected “you won an airdrop” message as a wallet-drainer trap. Related ideas include snapshot, eligibility criteria, and claim window.
