Slashing is the network’s enforcement tool. If a validator breaks the rules, for example by signing conflicting blocks or going offline for too long, the protocol automatically confiscates a portion of its staked tokens. This discourages cheating and sloppiness, because bad behaviour costs real money.<\/p>\n
For delegators, slashing is a key risk to understand. When you delegate to a validator, part of your stake can be reduced if that validator is slashed, even though you did nothing wrong. This is why validator quality matters so much.<\/p>\n
Example: a validator accidentally runs two machines that double-sign blocks; the network slashes a percentage of its stake, and everyone delegated to it shares the loss proportionally.<\/p>\n
