What is Mainnet?

The live, real-money version of a blockchain where transactions carry actual value and are permanent, as opposed to a practice testnet.

Mainnet is the production blockchain where everything is real. Tokens have value, transactions cost real gas fees, and actions are permanent. It is the counterpart to a testnet, which uses valueless test tokens for practice. When a project “launches on mainnet”, it means the real thing is now live.

This matters because the stakes change completely from testnet to mainnet. Mistakes on mainnet cost real money and cannot be undone, so it rewards care and preparation.

Example: after practising swaps on a testnet with free tokens, you perform the same action on mainnet using real funds, paying a real gas fee for a permanent, valuable transaction.

Safety note: treat mainnet actions with respect. Double-check addresses, amounts, and the site you are connected to before signing anything, because there is no undo. Practising first on a testnet builds the muscle memory to avoid costly errors. Scammers sometimes blur the line, so make sure you know whether you are spending real value or not. Related terms include testnet, gas fee, on-chain, and blockchain.
