What is Proof of Work?

A consensus method where computers compete to solve hard puzzles to add blocks, securing the network through expended energy.

Proof of work is the original blockchain consensus mechanism, used by Bitcoin. Miners compete to solve a computationally hard puzzle, and the first to succeed earns the right to add the next block and receive a reward. The enormous computing effort makes rewriting history prohibitively expensive, which secures the network.

This matters as a contrast to proof of stake. Proof of work secures through energy and hardware rather than staked capital, which shapes how those networks operate and why they do not offer staking rewards in the same way.

Example: miners run specialised machines racing to find a valid solution; the winner adds the block and collects the block reward plus transaction fees.

Safety note: proof of work is highly secure for large networks but energy-intensive, and small proof-of-work chains can be vulnerable to attacks if their total mining power is low. From a scam-awareness view, be skeptical of “cloud mining” services promising fixed daily profits, as many are Ponzi schemes. Understanding a network’s consensus helps you assess how robust it truly is. Related terms include proof of stake, consensus, node, and blockchain.
