Avalanche secures its primary network through proof-of-stake, and AVAX holders can earn rewards either by running a validator or by delegating to one. The official documentation lives at build.avax.network/docs, which sets out the requirements clearly: a validator must stake at least 2,000 AVAX and run a node, while a delegator can start from 25 AVAX by delegating to an existing validator. Both approaches are non-custodial in the sense that you retain ownership, but the mechanics differ from many other chains.
Rewards depend heavily on validator behavior. The documentation states a validator only receives a reward if it is sufficiently responsive and correct during its validation period, with an uptime threshold around 80%. Delegators earn on the same formula but pay a fee set by the validator they choose. Because rewards are tied to performance and to network-wide staking levels, they are variable and never guaranteed.
The most important thing to understand about Avalanche staking is its rigidity. Once you submit a transaction to stake or delegate, the parameters are fixed: the docs are explicit that you cannot remove your stake early or change the amount, node ID, duration, or reward address. You choose a lock-up between two weeks and one year up front, and your AVAX is committed for that entire period. This makes it essential to double-check every detail and to pick a reliable, high-uptime validator before you commit.
To participate safely, read the official documentation, use only official Avalanche interfaces and wallets, and confirm the validator’s uptime and delegation fee.
