What is Private Key?
The secret cryptographic code that lets you spend the crypto in a specific address; possessing it means controlling those funds.
A private key is the secret number that authorises spending from a crypto address. It mathematically proves ownership without revealing itself, by producing signatures that the network can verify. Whoever holds the private key can move the funds, full stop.
Understanding this clarifies a core crypto truth: control equals ownership. A wallet does not “store” your coins so much as it stores the private keys that let you spend balances recorded on the blockchain.
Example: when you send crypto, your wallet uses your private key behind the scenes to sign the transaction; you never see the key, but the signature proves the payment is authorised by you.
Safety note: a private key must stay as secret as a seed phrase, because it is essentially the same level of access to one address. Never paste a private key into a website, share it with “support”, or store it in plain text online. Importing a private key that a stranger gave you is a classic trap, since they can still drain any funds you add. Related terms include seed phrase, public key, EOA, and message signing.
