What is Governance Token?
A token that grants voting rights over a project's decisions, letting holders influence changes to the protocol or treasury.
A governance token gives its holders a say in how a decentralized project is run. Holders can propose and vote on changes such as adjusting parameters, funding initiatives, or upgrading the protocol, usually with voting power proportional to how much they hold. Many airdrops distribute governance tokens to reward and empower early users.
This matters because governance tokens are a frequent airdrop reward and represent participation, not just speculation. Holding one can let you shape a protocol you use.
Example: a DEX airdrops its governance token to past traders, who can then vote on proposals like changing fees or allocating treasury funds.
Safety note: governance tokens still carry market risk and are sometimes hyped beyond their real utility. Concentrated holdings can let a few large holders, or the team, dominate votes, undermining the “decentralized” promise. Voting itself is an on-chain action, so beware fake governance sites and malicious proposals designed to trick you into harmful approvals. Verify official governance portals before signing anything.
