What is Layer 2?

A secondary network built on top of a base blockchain to make transactions faster and cheaper while inheriting the base chain's security.

A Layer 2 is a network that runs on top of a base blockchain, called Layer 1, to handle transactions more cheaply and quickly. It processes activity off the main chain, then settles the results back to Layer 1, inheriting much of the base chain’s security while easing congestion and lowering gas fees.

This matters for reward seekers because many airdrops and quests happen on Layer 2s, where low fees make experimentation affordable. Trying new Layer 2s early has been a common path to airdrops.

Example: instead of paying high fees to swap directly on a congested Layer 1, you bridge funds to a Layer 2, transact for a fraction of the cost, and settle securely to the base chain.

Safety note: moving funds to a Layer 2 usually involves a bridge, which is a common target for hacks and scams. Use only official bridges linked from verified sources, watch for look-alike domains, and understand that assets on a Layer 2 depend on that network and its bridge functioning correctly. Related terms include bridge, gas fee, mainnet, and blockchain.
