What is Wrapped Token?

A token that represents another asset on a different blockchain, letting you use, for example, Bitcoin's value inside another network.

A wrapped token is a stand-in that represents another asset, often from a different blockchain, in a one-to-one ratio. The original asset is locked by a custodian or contract, and an equivalent wrapped version is issued on the target network, where it can be used in that ecosystem’s apps. This lets value from one chain participate in another’s DeFi.

This matters because wrapping is how assets move across ecosystems, enabling you to use, for instance, Bitcoin-backed value inside a smart-contract network for trading or earning.

Example: to use Bitcoin’s value in Ethereum DeFi, you hold a wrapped version whose backing Bitcoin is held in reserve, redeemable back to the original.

Safety note: a wrapped token is only as trustworthy as whatever holds the underlying asset. If the custodian or bridge fails or is hacked, the wrapped token can lose its backing and its value. Understand who or what backs a wrapped asset, and be cautious with obscure wrapped tokens or unofficial bridges. Related terms include bridge, cross-chain, stablecoin, and smart contract.
