What is Account Abstraction?

A technology that lets crypto accounts behave like smart contracts, enabling features like recovery, spending limits, and gasless transactions.

Account abstraction lets wallet accounts run on programmable smart-contract logic instead of being tied to a single private key like a traditional EOA. This unlocks features that ordinary accounts cannot offer, such as social recovery if you lose access, daily spending limits, multiple signers, and letting someone else sponsor your gas fees.

This matters because it can make self-custody safer and friendlier. Recovery options and built-in limits reduce the all-or-nothing danger of a single lost or stolen seed phrase.

Example: a smart-contract wallet using account abstraction might let you regain access through trusted guardians if you lose your device, rather than losing everything because a seed phrase is gone.

Safety note: added features mean added complexity and new smart-contract risk, since the account itself is code that could contain bugs. Use well-audited, established implementations, and understand how any recovery or guardian setup works before relying on it. The convenience is real, but you are still responsible for configuring and safeguarding the wallet properly. Related terms include smart contract wallet, EOA, multisig, and gasless transaction.
