What is Max Supply?

The highest number of a token's units that can ever exist, when the protocol enforces a permanent hard cap on supply.

Max supply is the absolute ceiling on how many units of a token can ever be created, when a project sets a hard cap. Once that limit is reached, no more can be minted. Some tokens have a fixed max supply, prized for scarcity, while others have no cap and can be issued indefinitely.

This matters because max supply shapes long-term scarcity and inflation. A capped supply behaves very differently from one that inflates forever, affecting how a token might hold value.

Example: a token with a fixed max supply means holders know dilution ends at that limit, whereas an uncapped token can keep issuing new units through staking rewards indefinitely.

Safety note: check whether a token truly has an enforced max supply in its contract, because marketing claims of scarcity do not always match the code. A contract that allows unlimited or discretionary minting lets insiders dilute or rug holders, even if a “max supply” is advertised. Verify supply mechanics on a block explorer or audit before trusting scarcity narratives. Related terms include circulating supply, fully diluted valuation, tokenomics, and minting.
